Gestational Diabetes is when your blood glucose levels increase during pregnancy. It occurs due to some of the hormones produced during pregnancy affecting the way insulin works. Insulin is the hormone which helps control your blood glucose levels.

Gestational Diabetes can cause problems for you and your baby during pregnancy and after birth. But the risks can be reduced if the condition is detected early and well managed.

If you have previously had Gestational Diabetes, you have up to a 1 in 2 chance of developing Type 2 Diabetes in the next 5-10 years and having Gestational Diabetes in future pregnancies.
