The Grampian adult insulin pump service supports people with diabetes in the region using insulin pumps. Insulin pumps supply a continuous basal or background rate of insulin. Pump technology allows for the rate to have preset pattern over the 24-hour period and this can be adjusted as required for physical activity, stress or illness. In addition they are also able to deliver a bolus dose of insulin at meal times. All pumps have a bolus calculator and the bolus can be also be programmed to be delivered in a customised manner over a period of time.
Insulin pump therapy is also referred to as continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) and is considered the most flexible way of delivering insulin for the management of Type 1 Diabetes.
Insulin pumps continue to become technically more advanced over the last few years. Some models now have access to algorithms that can adjust insulin delivery in response to continuously monitored glucose levels. This helps improve overall diabetes control by minimising blood glucose fluctuations above and below the desired target range. Insulin pump therapy is particularly useful to support people who lose their warning symptoms of low blood glucose.
